Cephalosporins are a group of semi-synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics. They are structurally and pharmacologically related to penicillins and belong to the group called as beta-lactams. They were first isolated from cultures of a bacterium called Cephalosporium, hence the name. They are grouped into generations based on their spectrum of anti-bacterial activity.
